What is a Slot?

A slot is a dynamic container that waits for or calls out for content to be added. It is used for displaying and managing dynamic items on a Web page. A slot works in tandem with a scenario or renderer to deliver and display the content in the slot.

The definition of slot varies depending on the context. In general, it refers to a position in a group, series, or sequence. It may also refer to a job or position in an organization or hierarchy. For example, a journalist might be asked to fill in for the chief copy editor, or an employee might be transferred from one position in the company to another.

In computer science, a slot is a special place in a database where changes can be queued for storage or immediate consumption. A logical replication slot does not know the state of its consumer(s), so it can serve up changes regardless of which consumer is currently reading from the source database.

A slot is also a specific part of a computer game or other electronic machine that accepts paper tickets with barcodes, and displays and pays out winning combinations on its reels. Older slot games usually have a single pay line, but newer machines can have multiple lines and various types of symbols. In addition, many have a variety of bonus features. The information about how to play a slot game is contained in a document called a pay table.
